PA: Warren cuts $400,000 from athletics budget03-Jul-2011 Times Observer, Warren, PA |
After all the talk of consolidating to two sports teams, and a little talk of cutting sports out of the budget altogether, each of Warren County School District's four high schools will operate athletics programs during the 2011-2012 school year. Many aspects of the county's sports programs remain the same. As in the past, students at each school will be able to play on teams made up of students from their schools. Some sports won't be offered at some locations - tennis, swimming and girls golf are unique to Warren Area High School, Sheffield doesn't offer baseball, only Eisenhower and Warren have soccer and boys golf. Students who want to play a sport that is not offered at their school may participate via a cooperative agreement with another school. Some things will change. In the past, sports programs were fully funded by the district. The athletics budget was about $1.1 million in 2010-2011. The school board pared that line item down to $626,137 - the amount members expected to pony up for athletics under a consolidated two-teams plan approved in the preliminary budget in May. Students will pay to participate in their chosen sports. As the budget discussions and votes stand Tuesday, students who want to participate in co-curricular activities, including athletics, will have to pay a fee. Board members hoped to generate $75,000 in revenue with that measure. That amount isn't close to the $400,000 reduction in sports expenditures. According to the decision made Monday, students will be responsible to make up the shortfall for their sports. Sports boosters and other individuals and organizations are expected to help student athletes cover the costs. |
