OH: Pickerington raises sports, activity fees

Pickerington raises sports, activity fees

High school athletes will pay $500 per sport

The school board adopted a new fee schedule Monday for the 2011-12 school year that more than doubles this year's fees.

The pay-to-participate fee for high school sports will rise to $500 per sport, up from the current $210.

Participants in high school band, theater and choir will pay $275 per activity next school year.

The fee for junior high school sports will rise to $325 per sport, up from the current $135.

School board members said the increased fees are needed to cope with higher expenses and dwindling revenue. The higher fee schedule was the second budget shoe to drop.

The first came in January when the school board reacted to reduced state funding and a failed levy last year by approving $13 million in budget cuts. The cuts will eliminate the jobs of about 100 teachers, classroom aides, school nurses, secretaries and administrators.
