CA: Sacremento, "Really awful" cuts proposed for SCUSD28-Jan-2012 KCRA TV |
| Dozens of parents on Thursday evening attended the first of five community forums to discuss the proposed budget for the Sacramento City Unified School District.
At the Luther Burbank High School auditorium, what those in attendance heard was a harsh reality check into the district's finances. Superintendent Jonathan Raymond told the crowd the information was not meant to scare them, but added that the proposed reductions are "really awful." Raymond said the district has cut $186 million over the past 10 years, but is still looking at a $28 million deficit due to increased costs and declining enrollment. He said to avoid a state takeover, the district must provide a balanced budget to Sacramento County by March 15. "We've been spending a lot of time trying to get the community to wake up and say children are our investment. They're the future," Raymond said. He warned, the projections could worsen if voters do not approve Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed tax increases. Some of the cuts being considered include eliminating middle and high school counselors and librarians, and cutting the number of plant managers and the custodial staff in half. Support for programs including sports, yearbook and band may be cut. |
